Pressestimmen

“[Robert Fitzgerald’s translation is] a masterpiece . . . An Odyssey worthy of the original.” –The Nation “[Fitzgerald’s Odyssey and Iliad] open up once more the unique greatness of Homer’s art at the level above the formula; yet at the same time they do not neglect the brilliant texture of Homeric verse at the level of the line and the phrase.” –The Yale Review “[In] Robert Fitzgerald’s translation . . . there is no anxious straining after mighty effects, but rather a constant readiness for what the occasion demands, a kind of Odyssean adequacy to the task in hand, and this line-by-line vigilance builds up into a completely credible imagined world.” –from the Introduction by Seamus Heaney

Unfortunately I deleted the title on my Kindle App by mistake, but I could never re-download it, as was possible with other books. When I click on content, Amazon is unable to find the page. When I search for the book on Amazon separately I get different information on price and on author (mine was Homer Homer, without the translator). Also, for my taste, the translation is too free.

It is rare among Kindle publications of classics that any care whatsoever has been provided to the subject at hand. THE ODYSSEY (ANNOTATED) is such a rare case where the digital-only publisher put in just enough effort to make this a worthwhile purchase. It should be duly noted that Pope's Odyssey, the work itself, is not annotated with footnotes, as much as one wishes it was. As such, the title THE ODYSSEY (ANNOTATED) can be a little misleading but is certainly in line with the malpractice so common by other hack publishers on the Kindle market. There is a new Introduction, though, that deserves some praise, and the work is, for the most part, correctly formatted for Kindle (e.g. em dashes [—] are correctly placed), with a linked table of contents upfront.Although it must be said that yet more care should have gone into the formatting of the work. Certain terms in the Preface marked by slashes (/) on both sides, were clearly intended to be italicized by the author, yet they were not granted such treatment by the editor. It is a common standard to italicize works mentioned, and this is amiss in the new Introduction as well. Perhaps indentation should have been subject of consideration for the poem whenever single verse lines, due to their considerable length, are automatically wrapped to the next line, without being an actual new verse line themselves. The digraph "Ae," so variously scattered throughout a Grecian work such as this, should have been replaced by the proper ligature "Æ" as well. Exactly why the verse lines lack numbering is not quite conceivable.Nonetheless overall this is a noteworthy publication of Pope's translation of Homer — a solid entry for the young publisher. I hope for Pope's ILIAD to be next in line.

Quite written in and I must say that this person needs to practice tracing letters once more. Book is sligjtly creased outside and the spine is used (as said, so good on that part). All pages are there and full. No bad comments.

What more is there to say? If you want to explore key myths in stories that have shaped Western civilisation -- or simply want a good read -- Robert Fagles' translation of The Odyssey is excellent

Ich wollte schon immer mal was von Homer lesen und war freudig erstaunt so etwas bei Amazon zu finden. Nur zu empfehlen. Der Download war gut und schnell.

Very good and authentic translation. Not the most beautiful one, maybe - a bit rough and very dry sometimes. But really useful, highly recommended!

I am german and not a native speaker. The translation is far better readible for me than german translations. Also the content and the speeches by the respective warriors is structured very well. The best translation I ever noticed!

You'll get Fagles' amazing translation of an amazing story in a wonderful print-out version (rough cut, nice paper). Simply 'bewitching'
